Baker Hotel
Baker Hotel
Description
The Baker Hotel in Colorado City, Texas, is what remains of a once-proud establishment in a town that was, in its heyday, the largest community between Fort Worth and El Paso. Built in the 1920s as part of Theodore Baker’s broader hotel enterprise across West Texas, the building still stands today — though it is little more than a gutted shell, its interior stripped bare and left to the elements.
The hotel’s dark legacy reportedly began early in its history when a fire broke out and claimed the lives of several workers who lived in the basement of the building. According to local legend, these were the lower-wage staff — maintenance workers, launderers, and laborers — who resided on the premises. Whether due to the hour of the fire, the lack of escape routes from the basement, or some combination of factors, they reportedly never made it out.
Today, the Baker Hotel sits largely in ruin, adjoined by the 3M Palace Theater, which was renovated in 2007. While the theater saw new life, the hotel itself has remained a decaying monument to Colorado City’s past. Visitors and urban explorers who have passed through the property have reported strange sensations in and around the basement area — including the sounds of moaning, shadowy movements, and an unsettling feeling of being watched. Some claim to have seen the apparitions of the workers who perished there, drifting through the lower levels at particular times of day or night.
The Baker Hotel in Colorado City should not be confused with the more widely known Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas, also built by the Baker family and equally steeped in ghostly lore. The Colorado City location has a quieter, lesser-documented history, but for those who know where to look, the stories are no less haunting.
