Harpo Studios -
Originally believed to be haunted by victims of the Great Chicago Fire, the building now known as Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Inc. main studios has long carried a reputation for paranormal activity. Many refuse to stay in the building after dark, citing fear of ghostly encounters.
Correction - February 2005:
The true haunting is tied not to the Great Fire of 1871, but to the Eastland shipwreck disaster of 1915. At the time of the tragedy, the building served as an armory and was repurposed as a temporary morgue for some of the 830 victims who perished in the Chicago River.
The Harpo site did not exist in 1871 and would have been located in an undeveloped part of the city. Oprah herself has spoken openly about the presence of ghosts in the building and shows no fear of them.
