Hood College – Memorial Hall
Hood College – Memorial Hall
Description
Memorial Hall is home to one of Hood’s most persistent ghost stories — the spirit of a student named Sheila. According to legend, Sheila was killed near the elevator by a rejected suitor who chased her through the first floor. Her ghost is said to haunt the elevator to this day. The doors open and slam shut on their own, and students are carried to random floors without pressing any buttons. Sheila’s moods are well known among residents — when she was unhappy, students learned to take the stairs.

Haunted Lineage note: The original Shadowlands Database entry for Hood College blended legends from multiple buildings on campus. This listing has been separated to focus specifically on Memorial Hall. The elevator ghost legend — attributed to a spirit named Sheila — is specifically tied to Memorial Hall in multiple sources, including Hood College's own published campus history and the Folklore at Hood College archive. Sheila is described as a student killed near the elevator by a rejected suitor. The specific claims could not be substantiated through news archives, police records, or historical documents at this time. This legend is well-established among Hood students and faculty.
