Shadow Person

1 min read Updated March 27, 2026

A Shadow Person is a humanoid figure that appears as a dense, dark mass, often lacking any discernible facial features or clothing.

A dense, featureless shadow figure stands at the end of a dim hallway, appearing as a solid void darker than the surrounding darkness.

They are typically seen out of the corner of the eye (peripheral vision) and are known for moving quickly across hallways or standing in corners. Witnesses often describe them as being ‘blacker than black,’ appearing as if they are a hole in the light rather than a standard shadow.

While some attribute shadow people to the ‘fear response’ and low-light optical illusions, others believe they are a distinct type of entity. Unlike ghosts, which often appear translucent or misty, shadow people appear solid and opaque. They are often associated with feelings of dread or paralysis, leading some researchers to link them to the phenomenon of sleep paralysis and the ‘old hag’ archetype.
