Abingdon Middle School

There have been stories of a teacher who hanged herself after her child fell down the stairs on a tricycle. Witnesses have reported hearing screams, cries, and the squealing of tricycle tires. There have also been sightings of the woman and the child together again. Bloodstains have allegedly been found in every room—on the walls, on the steps, and above the staircase where she hanged herself and the child fell.

January 2007 – Additional Information/Confirmation:
A former student who attended in 1974 and 1975—when the building was still a high school before becoming a junior high—confirmed the rumors about the room above the gym. It was used as a speech classroom. It was a small room accessed by a short set of steps. The building was brick and once had a huge chimney attached to it, which was knocked down by a tornado in the spring of 1974.

The story of the child falling down the stairs on a tricycle and the mother hanging herself was already being told back then. There’s a walkway that runs along the upper sides of the gym. That’s where the child reportedly rode her tricycle back and forth, with only metal pipe rails preventing a fall.
