Local lore suggests the school was built over an old cemetery, with only the headstones relocated while the remains remained beneath. Over the years, bones have surfaced on the football field, and in one instance, a grave collapsed in the front lawn, requiring it to be filled.
In May 2008, a football player reportedly tripped over a resurfacing coffin during practice. His father was present when a femur bone was unearthed, later confirmed to be human.
The fourth floor is strictly off-limits, surrounded by chilling tales of its tragic past. Students who ventured there claim to have heard frantic banging on doors, as if souls were trapped, trying to escape. According to legend, a devastating fire once engulfed the floor, claiming the lives of everyone inside. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
One eerie aspect of the story states that the nearest three fire stations, which could have responded in time, found their doors mysteriously jammed, preventing the trucks from leaving. A station five miles away was forced to respond, but by the time help arrived, it was too late.
A retired fireman, unaware of this legend, did recall a fire at Roosevelt High School during floor renovations. Three off-duty firemen lost their lives while assisting with the blaze, adding another layer of tragedy to the school’s unsettling history.
