Astral projection is a specific, often intentional, type of out-of-body experience (OBE) where one consciously separates their consciousness, or an alleged “astral body” or “subtle body,” from the physical body. The goal of astral projection is typically to travel to other locations, different planes of existence, or even other dimensions within what is known as the “astral plane.” Unlike spontaneous OBEs, astral projection is frequently sought through deliberate techniques such as deep meditation, visualization, lucid dreaming, or specific relaxation exercises, aiming for controlled and voluntary excursions.
Proponents of astral projection believe that the astral body is connected to the physical body by an invisible, elastic “silver cord,” which allows for the re-entry of consciousness into the physical form and prevents permanent separation. Accounts of astral travel include experiencing weightlessness, moving through solid objects, observing events from afar, and encountering other entities or landscapes on the astral plane. While often considered a spiritual or metaphysical practice, scientific inquiry views astral projection as a subjective experience that may be explained by psychological states or vivid hallucinations. Nevertheless, its practice remains a significant aspect of various esoteric traditions and personal spiritual exploration, offering a unique perspective on consciousness and reality.
