Cabelands – John Cabe Family Cemetery

Description

Cabe Lands Cemetery – Eno River Valley, NC
About 200 yards off the Cabe Lands Trail, tucked away from modern maps, lies a long-abandoned cemetery deep in the Eno River Valley. Only 12 graves still have formal markers, but many more may rest beneath the soil. Their simple stones have either worn down with time or disappeared entirely. This quiet stretch of land once belonged to an early settler family, though the history of the area goes even further back.

Indigenous tribes and European settlers once lived here, and some believe that the layered past has left behind more than just stories.

Homestead & Bluff
Some visitors say they've heard whispers around the old homestead and the bluff where an ancient oak still stands. One couple, exploring near dusk, reported hearing scattered words like "noise," "miller," "flags," and "years." They were shaken enough to avoid the trail after dark from then on.

A local investigator says the site almost always yields EVP recordings. In one, voices of a man, a woman, and a chatty young girl were captured. The man’s voice repeated the same mysterious phrases reported by the couple.

Others have felt an unseen presence beside them, heard breathing near their ear, or whispers without anyone around. Distant shrieks from the woods have startled hikers, and one investigator described a shadow figure near the cemetery that vanished before it could be documented.
