Coon Hill Cemetery

Description

If you walk along the high, wide brick wall surrounding the cemetery, it’s said that before you make it halfway, you’ll be pushed off by unseen hands. Many voices can be heard within the cemetery, and several murders have reportedly occurred on that very spot. It is very desolate and located deep in the woods—difficult to find.

Many local photos have circulated showing ghosts within the cemetery. Some have been proven hoaxes, while others—some quite old—appear to be genuine. There are reports of a thick fog that hovers just inches above the ground, and every time it appears, a small child can be heard singing.

Directions:
Take Chumuckla Highway off Highway 90. There's a Tom Thumb and Waffle House at the corner. Drive about 5 to 8 miles down Chumuckla Highway. You’ll see another Tom Thumb on your left, which is also the road for Chumuckla Elementary (Highway 182). Turn left there. Follow that road to the very end until you reach a stop sign—this is Chumuckla Spring Road. Turn right. Stay on this road; you’ll cross two narrow bridges. At the next stop sign, turn right again. Continue down this road until you reach a house at a fork in the road—take the left fork. The cemetery road is the second dirt road on your left. Go all the way to the end. You’ll see the cemetery as you round the final corner. The wall is not very high, and the cemetery itself is small.

February 2005 Update:
An investigator reports that the woods around the graveyard are being clear-cut, and the dirt road has been closed off with a gate. You now have to stop at the gate and walk about a quarter mile to reach the site. It was considered an excellent haunted location—deep in the woods, an old creaking gate leading into a walled graveyard. On one visit, the moonlight was bright and a fog gathered across the ground. The investigators reported capturing two EVPs—one was decent, the other was incredible. Cameras worked fine while near the car, but once inside the graveyard, everything stopped functioning. Spare batteries were drained too. Only one photo was taken that could be linked directly to the EVP. That single shot showed an orb, and the EVP captured a girl’s voice saying, "Take a picture of me." That moment made the three hours spent in the cold worthwhile.

Caution:
Do not go to this site alone. It seems to attract unsavory individuals, especially at night.

January 2007 Update / Additional Information:
Everyone must leave the area by 1 a.m., as the police patrol the site frequently. Many people—a lot—have been injured from falling off the wall, tripping over graves, and breaking arms. Cell phone service is very limited or nonexistent out there. Officers have been known to escort minors back to the Tom Thumb or Groovin Noovins and wait for their parents to arrive, then retrieve their vehicle from the cemetery afterward.

There are homes nearby, so be respectful—especially in how loudly you drive down the road.
