McAuley Hall is haunted by a little boy who fell out of a window while watching his parents arrive by boat. Originally built in 1882 as a red sandstone mansion known as “Vinland,” the building was commissioned by philanthropist Catherine Lorillard Wolfe, whose fascination with Norse mythology inspired its unique architecture and carvings. Following her death, the estate eventually became a cornerstone of Salve Regina University.
Today, while it primarily serves as faculty offices and classrooms, the grand structure continues to hold echoes of its storied past. Alongside the legend of the young boy, campus folklore notes that visitors and staff frequently report hearing faint footsteps, witnessing flickering lights, and sensing an eerie, lingering presence throughout the halls.
