Banshee

The Banshee (derived from the Old Irish bean sídhe, meaning “woman of the fairy mound”) is a profound entity rooted deeply in Irish mythology and ancestral folklore. Unlike standard apparitions that are tied to a specific building or geographic location, the banshee is an entity tethered to a specific human bloodline. Traditionally, these spirits are said to follow the major, ancient Irish families—specifically those with surnames beginning with ‘O’ or ‘Mac’ (such as O’Connor, O’Neill, or MacCarthy)—regardless of where in the world the descendants may have migrated.
The hallmark of a banshee manifestation is its auditory signature: the ‘keen’ or wail. This sound is described as a high-pitched, mournful shriek, a sobbing lament, or a haunting vocalization that echoes through the night. The appearance of the entity varies wildly in lore; she may manifest as a beautiful young woman singing a sorrowful song, a stately matron, or a frightening, disheveled old hag with red eyes swollen from centuries of weeping.
It is a common modern misconception, fueled by Hollywood and pop-culture horror, that the banshee is a malevolent, demonic force that attacks the living or causes death. In authentic folklore, the banshee is strictly a harbinger or omen. She does not cause the death of the family member; rather, her keening is a forewarning and a lamentation, arriving to mourn the impending passing of a loved one before the family has even received the news. She is a spirit of grief, not a spirit of wrath.
In modern anomalous research, investigating claims of a banshee requires rigorous acoustic debunking. High-sample-rate audio recorders and spectrogram analysis are deployed to capture the vocalization. Investigators must meticulously rule out natural nocturnal wildlife—such as the terrifying shrieks of foxes, barn owls, bobcats, or mating feral cats—as well as high-pressure wind shearing across chimney flues and ventilation pipes, which can closely mimic human wailing.
