Infrared cameras vs. thermal imaging: two tools measuring completely different things

In ghost hunting discussions, night vision cameras and thermal imaging get lumped together as "heat vision," but they work on entirely different physics. Night vision floods a dark room with invisible infrared light and captures the reflection off solid surfaces, while thermal cameras detect radiant heat emission without emitting any light at all.

Pointing an IR illuminator at a cold spot won't tell you anything about thermal loss, just like a thermal camera can't reveal a visible shadow figure walking past a doorframe. How do you integrate night vision and thermal sensors on an investigation so you don't confuse reflected light with actual temperature anomalies?
