Microphonic breath vs. true vocal resonance: analyzing whispered audio

When reviewing audio after an investigation, the vast majority of suspected voice captures are faint, raspy whispers that sit right at the noise floor. The challenge is that someone sighing, turning their head near a lapel mic, or shifting their coat collar produces an identical white-noise scrape that easily sounds like a voice.

A true vocal anomaly, however, usually displays clear acoustic resonance—harmonic formant spikes that reflect off the walls and timber of the physical room itself, showing the sound originated out in open air rather than against the microphone capsule. When you analyze audio clips, what specific acoustic signs convince you that a whisper came from the room rather than human gear noise?
