Spirit Boxes, Sweepers, and Audio Pareidolia: Science or Suggestion?
When evaluating instrumental transcommunication (ITC), especially fast-sweep radio frequency devices like the SB7 or SB11 versus reverse-speech sweeping applications, the debate often comes down to audio pareidolia versus genuine preternatural communication.
In a typical radio sweep environment, the hardware rapidly cycles through AM/FM frequencies (often at 100ms–200ms steps). Statistically, bits of radio broadcast speech will bleed through. While the human brain excels at pattern recognition—turning random white noise and phonetic fragments into perceived words—there are instances where multiple syllables or context-specific direct responses occur across several sweeps.
What standards do you use in the field to eliminate suggestion and pareidolia? Do you run silent control baselines, blind listening sessions where investigators do not know the questions asked, or rely primarily on Faraday shielding?
