The "rock-throwing" behavior: intimidation or a warning to leave?

One of the most unsettling things people describe in dense woods isn't seeing a massive figure, but hearing a fist-sized rock come flying out of nowhere and smash into a tree trunk right next to them. It's almost never aimed to injure, but it hits with enough force that you know it wasn't dropped by a squirrel or kicked by a deer.

Hunters and hikers usually report a single rock or heavy branch thrown from deep cover right after they hear heavy footsteps pacing them just out of sight. Have you ever had stones or sticks thrown in your direction while out in the timber? How did you react in the moment?
