McCandless Hall is reportedly haunted by two distinct spirits. The first is Abigail Burns, a young opera singer who performed La Traviata at the auditorium’s dedication in 1914. After her performance, legend states she was killed in a carriage accident during a severe thunderstorm when her horses were spooked, sending the carriage off a bridge. Having made a promise to return and stay, her apparition has been reported in the winter months, standing in a third-floor window bathed in moonlight, wearing a white gown and clutching a bouquet of red roses.
The building is also said to be haunted by the strict spirit of Madame Childs, who reportedly manifests to reprimand young women who stay out past curfew.
