Many soldiers died and their ghosts were said to haunt this former site of an army hospital in the Presidio. Before demolition, the abandoned building was boarded up, graffiti-filled, and spooky. Witnesses reported hearing footsteps, seeing reflections of light, and feeling cold drafts. The hospital was torn down, and the site is now the Letterman Digital Arts Center, owned by Lucasfilm. There have been no new reports since the transition.

Opened in 1969 to treat Vietnam War casualties and care for military families, Letterman Army Medical Center served as a 550-bed hospital in the Presidio, complemented by the Letterman Army Institute of Research built behind it in 1973 for studies in medicine, optics, nutrition, and toxicology. Following the closure of these medical facilities in 1992, the historic military post was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994, paving the way for the site to be redeveloped in 2005 into the Letterman Digital Arts Center, Lucasfilm’s headquarters.
