This building formerly served as a mental hospital, built in the mid-1800s. It consists of an old stone center building with newer brick wings extending to the east and west. Before it was converted into a prison in the 1980s, a former employee working the 11 PM to 7 AM shift reported an incident on the top floor of the east wing’s middle ward. The ward to the west contained offices and group rooms, while the ward to the east was purportedly empty. Coworkers frequently asked if the employee was afraid to work in the unit or had seen anything unusual. The warnings made sense one night when a terrible racket began in the empty unit, sounding like heavy metal furniture being dragged across the floor and slammed into the walls. The noise shook the walls and occasionally woke the patients. Whenever the unit was searched, it appeared untouched, as if no one had been inside for years. Apparitions have also been seen in the halls.
