Located in Downey behind the courthouse, there is an abandoned mental hospital where lights have been seen shining through the windows, despite the power being shut off for years. Witnesses have observed curtains closing on their own as they pass by the building. Those who have ventured inside and descended the stairs report experiencing pitch-black darkness, followed by the sudden, unexplained throwing of books at intruders.
Haunted Lineage note: Previously listed as ‘Hollydale’. The official name is Rancho Los Amigos. The address and listing title were updated to reflect the correct official name and location at the Rancho Los Amigos South Campus, Lyndora Street, Downey, California, 90242.
Established in 1888 as the Los Angeles County Poor Farm, the facility expanded to treat patients with chronic illnesses, polio, and mental health conditions. The now-abandoned South Campus has a long history of serving indigent and psychiatric patients before being shuttered.
