In Coloma, CA, there is a famous Victorian house called the Vineyard House, which has been reputed to be haunted by its original owners for many years. The house was built in the late 1800s and served over the years as a jail, an inn, a restaurant, and a winery. According to records, the original owners suffered one tragedy after another: several of their children passed away, their winery was ruined by blight, and the husband eventually succumbed to disease and mental illness. Due to his condition, his wife reportedly chained him to a wall in the basement, where he died.
The family is buried across the street in a graveyard overlooking the house, where ghostly figures have been spotted. Inside the house, employees and guests have shared numerous encounters. One couple staying upstairs was awakened late at night by the sound of laughter and singing downstairs. When the husband looked out to investigate, he witnessed three figures in Victorian attire ascending the stairs before vanishing. Another couple fled in the middle of the night, too terrified to speak of what they witnessed. The basement bar area is also a hotspot, where strange occurrences are frequently reported after closing hours.
