The Avard High School gymnasium served as Vina Rae’s Grill & Graze cafe, which was opened by Nan Wheatley in 1995 but permanently closed around 2010. The building is now abandoned. The headless apparition is often associated with the tragic cold case of Mildred Anne ‘Annie’ Newlin Reynolds, a 22-year-old woman whose charred remains were discovered in her burned vehicle near Avard in 1956. Her husband, Dee Reynolds, was the basketball coach at the high school at the time. Paranormal investigators have also reported a hostile male entity named Isaac.
