This large enclave of buildings in Camarillo is now a university, but it was originally built in the 1920s as a state mental hospital. It was converted into a school in the mid-90s. Over the years, there have been many stories of ghosts of all kinds, likely due to the fact that patients once lived—and died—there.
Some of the buildings are currently being turned into dorms, and students have reported all kinds of unexplained events. People have heard the sounds of children’s voices at the children’s center, seen an old woman by the bell tower asking for directions to the chapel, and spotted another woman in white wandering the hallways during the day.
In the restrooms, some have heard a voice saying “SSSHHHHH.” In parking lot A, witnesses have seen a figure that looks like a man spinning in circles until he vanishes near one of the streetlights. People also report seeing objects out of the corner of their eyes—only for them to disappear when they turn to look.
Many have had ghostly encounters at this site, both during the day and at night—the spirits don’t seem to prefer one over the other. Some students and staff have complained of headaches, nausea, a constant feeling of being watched, feeling unsafe or threatened, and even extreme tiredness.
There have also been numerous sightings of at least a dozen different entities around the Bell Tower and Police Station areas. (Currently, only a few of the buildings are in use – most remain abandoned.) Reported entities include a beautiful woman in white who wanders the hallways day and night, a man seen near the bus stop, and a nervous spirit in one of the women’s restrooms in the Bell Tower who not only chatters but also makes a rustling noise.
