The stretch of U.S. Highway 36 between Hannibal, Missouri, and Springfield, Illinois, is notorious for a phantom phenomenon known as the Vanishing Hitchhikers. According to local legend, a young couple in the 1950s was on their way to their senior prom when their car broke down on the side of the highway. As they walked toward a nearby service station for help, they were tragically struck and killed by a passing vehicle.
Today, truck drivers and everyday motorists frequently report spotting a vintage 1950s car broken down on the shoulder, with a young couple walking down the road just ahead of it. However, when drivers check their rearview mirrors after passing, the couple and their car simply vanish. Witnessed by hundreds of people over the decades, the apparitions are always seen on this specific stretch of roadway and are known to instantly switch from one side of the highway to the other in the blink of an eye.
