Built between 1898 and 1900 by J.J. Cruikshank Jr., one of Hannibal’s most successful lumber barons, the historic Rockcliffe Mansion sat abandoned for over four decades, earning a local reputation as “the haunted house on the hill.” Today, the beautifully restored mansion is believed to be watched over by Cruikshankβs protective spirit.
Visitors and staff frequently report experiencing a variety of lingering echoes from the past:
- Phantom Scents: The distinct smell of cigar smoke often wafts from Cruikshankβs parlor, despite a strict modern no-smoking policy.
- Disembodied Music: Beautiful piano music is frequently heard echoing from the music roomβa space that hasn’t housed an actual piano since the 1920s. It is widely believed to be the spirit of J.J.βs wife, Annie, who was a classically trained pianist.
- Apparitions: J.J. himself has been spotted roaming the property wearing a worn brown hat and coat.
- Playful Spirits: The spirit of a young girl, thought to be J.J. and Annieβs daughter, Helen, is said to haunt the estate. Upstairs, the faint sounds of children playing are often heard echoing through the empty third-floor ballroom.
