Established in 1837, the Old Baptist Cemetery is the oldest burial ground in Hannibal. Time has taken its toll on the grounds, leaving many headstones broken and countless more graves completely unmarked. Local lore suggests that a deeply solemn spirit protects the back area where many of these unmarked graves lie, and he makes it clear that he does not welcome visitors. Visitors often report cold spots, especially near the old elm tree, and strange mists or orbs.
The cemetery is known for several other distinct apparitions, including:
- A five-year-old girl who playfully engages in peek-a-boo in the northwest corner.
- A tall, dark figure wearing a long overcoat who lingers near the west fence line.
- A Civil War soldier, still proudly wearing his hat.
- A spirit known as Edward in the northeast section who, while not strictly hostile, is unfriendly and prefers to be left alone.
Filled with restless spirits who generally do not appreciate being disturbed, the Old Baptist Cemetery is widely considered to be one of the most haunted locations in Hannibal.
