The college was founded in 1844. Within the Margaret Upton Conservatory of Music, there have been recurring reports of phantom piano melodies drifting from empty practice rooms when no one is inside. Campus lore attributes the playing to Margaret Upton herself, the building’s namesake.

The University of Olivet was founded on February 24, 1844, by Reverend John J. "Father" Shipherd and 39 followers as a coeducational Christian college open to students of all races. Originally chartered as Olivet Institute, the school received its charter as a college in 1859.
