Olivet College was founded in 1844 by Reverend John J. Shipherd. Shipherd Hall was named in his honor and originally served as a women’s dormitory. After the original building was destroyed by a fire in 1959, a new Shipherd Hall residence hall was constructed in 1966 to continue housing students on campus.
