Construction & Sealed Upper Level: Constructed in 1929 as a men’s residence hall on the Missouri Valley College (now Missouri Valley University) campus, Young Hall originally housed roughly 100 students beneath its steep, pitched roofline. Over the decades, the attic-like fourth floor was permanently sealed off and locked away from student access. While ghost stories attribute the closure to sinister events, institutional records point to practical fire codes, outdated egress, and modern safety regulations, which rendered the uninsulated top floor unusable for residential boarding.
The Suicide Lore & Reported Haunting: Campus oral tradition dating back to the late 1960s or 1970s claims a student athlete—commonly remembered as a football player—died by hanging from the exposed fourth-floor rafters. Although local archives and contemporary newspapers lack corroborating records of the incident, the tragedy became entrenched in campus lore. Generations of residents have blamed the restricted floor for late-night footsteps pacing overhead, camera orb anomalies, sudden cold spots near the stairwells, and unexplained feelings of dread near the locked doors.
