Automatic Writing
Automatic Writing, also known as psychography, is a process where an individual produces written text, symbols, or artistic drawings without consciously directing the pen or understanding the content being produced. Within paranormal and esoteric traditions, this practice is viewed as a form of channeling or mediumship, where a discarnate spirit, entity, or higher consciousness temporarily takes control of the practitioner’s motor functions to deliver a message to the physical world.
The practice gained immense popularity during the Spiritualist movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mediums would enter a light or deep dissociative trance state, placing a pen to paper and allowing their hand to move rapidly. One of the most famous historical cases involves Pearl Curran, an American housewife who claimed to channel the spirit of a 17th-century puritan woman named Patience Worth. Through automatic writing and a Ouija board, Curran produced thousands of poems, novels, and plays of remarkably high literary quality, despite having little formal education.
From a psychological and skeptical perspective, automatic writing is universally attributed to the ideomotor effect. This physiological phenomenon occurs when a subject’s subconscious mind creates minute, involuntary muscle movements that guide the pen. Because these micro-movements bypass the conscious decision-making centers of the brain, the practitioner genuinely feels as though an external force is moving their hand. This is often coupled with cryptomnesia—the hidden recall of forgotten memories, vocabulary, or historical facts that the brain suddenly accesses and utilizes during the writing session.

In modern paranormal investigations, researchers treat automatic writing as an unreliable form of evidence due to the overwhelming influence of the human subconscious. However, it can still serve as a psychological tool to uncover the hidden anxieties, expectations, or repressed memories of a client or “agent” at a haunted location. When investigators employ it experimentally, they implement strict blind controls, ensuring the practitioner has zero prior knowledge of the location’s history, names, or reported entities to prevent subconscious bias from bleeding into the text.
